ISLAM: ITS MEANING AND MESSAGE
THE ESSENTIAL (by Khurshid Ahmad)
‘Islam’ means the act of resignation to God. It is an Arabic word, comes from the word ‘aslama’ which mean he submitted and he resigned himself. The root word is SLM (pronounced as ‘salm’).
Islam is the religion which brings peace to mankind when man commits to God and submits to His will, the only true religion professed by all Prophets, from Adam to Muhammad (pbuh), the last Prophet.
WHO IS ‘MUSLIM’?
‘Muslim’ is one who;
- Resigns himself to God and thereby professed the faith of Islam
- Believes in all Prophets and makes no distinction between one and the other
- Believes that God has sent His Prophets to the earth to preach the same religion, that His message stopped coming after the last revelations received by the last Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)
- Believes that the message received by the last Prophet is the most comprehensive and the final form of God’s message to human
-committed to the values of life given by the Quran and the Sunnah
-tries to live according to the guidance given by God and his Prophet
-strives to promote the message of Islam through his word and action
In order to be a true ‘Muslim’, 3 things are necessary;
i. Faith – faith in Allah and His Prophets
ii. Action – action in accordance with that faith
iii. Realization – realization of one’s relation to God as a result of action and obedience
